Recently some little mischief has copied all of our content and posted it as duplicates around the internet! Not happy and we have dropped rankings, but not to worry, its not the end of the world. Google is seeing this as spam and its having negative effects on the webs for us! Even the power of SEO Next online can be knocked (for a little time anyway…)

My advice to any website owner is to do the following;
1. have a blog and update it regularly
2. re-write your website content/copy every 2-3 months (quarterly maybe)

SEO content is still king! Keep your website fresh and give it a good spring clean regularly. If you need any more advice or tips on this, please do not hesitate to contact chris.tipper@seonext.co.uk and we can organise all of this for you!.

Duplicate content used as a weapon???

As we all know duplicate content is a problem in the world of SEO, and many company’s go to many lengths to avoid these problems on their websites or others company’s sites as a sign on respect. We all know mistakes can happen and some people do not realise what can happen by copying peoples content.

But what gets to me is when people know and try and use it as a weapon to cause companies a problem by posting your content from your home page and each landing page to blog / article sites all over the world to spammy sites that cannot be contacted.

The main reason I see people doing this is as they see your site as a threat and cannot compete so become underhanded and do the naughty thing and spam you!!!

The reason for this blog I have been noticing my rankings going down, then looked in to this and found that our content has been copied and spammed all over the net. This is a small problem as we have already taken measures to fix this problem and get this de-indexed and also reported this as it does not abide by The UCLA Online Institute for Cyberspace Law and Policy Guidelines.

So im pleased that you took the time and effort but we will be back to where we deserve to be in the next few days…

Thanks for this opportunity as it’s given us the option to have a link to our home page for SEO.

see this video below…How does this sit with you ?

What another day at SEO Next heights! Just thought I would tell everyone about a scenario I have with a client of mine today, it went a little something lite this;

1. Why is my website rankings going backwards on google?

2. I fell out of my seat and started swearing round the office…

3. After further investigation I found out that my client for the past 2 months had been copying and pasting content from around the internet relevant to her business and posting it into her blog.

4. She has also proceed to linking this content from within the duplicate blog content to other areas over her site.

5. I notified her of this and also her spammy homepage content that had more links in it than Alan Sugars new Rolex!

6. She replied with “Its ok, I have copied the web content, pasted it into word (to clean it in her mind), then posted it into her blog.

7. I then called her and explained the error of her ways

She had been on board about 3-4 months and we had started to move her site to page 2 on google.co.uk, previously it ranked no where. While she was linking all round her blog and website from this duplicate content she was spreading a infectious disease in Search Engine Optimisation circles which is known as a bad case of spammyitis!

We could have given her fresh content for her blog, but she preferred to write it herself and feel actively involved. I actually trained her quite well on how to post blogs and place links within them, but she got abit over amorous and went wild with duplicated content stolen from all round the internet.

Good news is, the duplicate content is removed, her homepage is back in shape with a good density of keywords and internal links. The client got told off for being a bad girl and all is well in her SEO world again.

Duplicate Content Problem solved

The “duplicate content penalty” myth is one of the biggest obstacles I face in getting web professionals to embrace reprint content. The myth is that search engines will penalize a site if much of its content is also on other websites.

Clarification: there is a real duplicate content penalty for content that is duplicated with minor or no variation across the pages of a single site. There is also a “mirror” penalty for a site that is more or less substantially duplicating another single site. What I’m talking about here is the reprint of pages of content individually, rather than in a mass, on multiple sites.

Another clarification: “penalty” is a loaded concept in SEO. “Penalty” means that search engines will punish a website for violations of the engine’s terms of service. The punishment can mean making it less likely that the site will appear in search results. Punishment can also mean removal from the search engine’s index of web pages (“de-indexing” or “delisting”).

How have I exploded the “duplicate content penalty” myth?

* PageRank. Many thousands of high-PageRank sites reprint content and provide content for reprint. The most obvious case is the news wires such as Reuters (PR and the Associated Press (PR 9) that reprint to sites such as http://www.nytimes.com (PR 10).

* The proliferation of content reprint sites. There are now hundreds of websites devoted to reprint content because it’s a cheap, easy magnet for web traffic, especially search engine traffic.

* Experience. I’ve seen significant search engine traffic both from distributing content to be reprinted and from reprinting content on the site.

How I Doubled Search Engine Traffic with Reprint Content

When I first started distributing content for my main site, I was stunned by the highly targeted traffic I got from visitors clicking on the link at the end of the article. Search engine traffic also slowly increased both from the links and from having content on the site.

But I was even more stunned with the search engine traffic I got when I started putting reprint articles on the site in September. I had written quite a number of reprint articles for clients and accumulated a few webmaster “fans” who looked out for my articles to reprint them. I wanted to make it easier for them to find all the reprint articles I had written.

I didn’t want to draw too much attention to these articles, which had nothing to do with the main subject of the site, web content. So I secluded the articles in one section of the site.

The articles got a surprising amount of search engine traffic. The traffic was overwhelmingly from Google, and for long multiple-word search strings that just happened to be in the article word for word.

Why was I surprised with all the search engine traffic?

1. The articles had so little link popularity. The link popularity to the articles came primarily from a single link to the “reprint content” page from the homepage, which linked to category pages, which linked to the articles themselves–three clicks from the homepage. The sitemap was enormous, well over 100 links, so its PageRank contribution was minimal. Since these articles were on the site such a short time I strongly doubt they got any links from other sites.

2. The articles had so much competition. These articles had been reprinted far more widely than the average reprint article, which is lucky if it makes it into a few dedicated reprint sites. As part of my service I had done most of the legwork of reprinting my clients’ articles for them. In fact, I guarantee at least 100 reprints on Google-indexed web pages either for each article or group of articles. So that’s up to 100 web pages, sometimes more, that were competing with my web page to appear in search engine results for the search string.

Why Do Reprint Articles Get Search Engine Traffic?

You would think Google would just pick one web page with the article as the authoritative edition and send all the traffic to it.

But that’s not how Google works. All the search engines look at factors beyond just the content on the web page. They look at links. Google, at least, claims to look at 100 factors total. Many of these must relate to the content on the page, but not all of them.

The whole experience has given me great insight into what factors Google uses in addition to what we would consider the page itself, and the relative importance of each.

* Web page titles (the one in the html title tag) are extremely important as tie-breakers between two otherwise equally matched pages. Most reprinters waste the html title, using the article title as the web page title. Set yourself apart by creating unique five-to-ten-word web page titles that include target keywords.

* Content tweaks. You can also introduce the article with a unique, keyword-laden editor’s note, and finish the article off with some keyword-laced comments.

* Intra-site link popularity and anchor text (that is, for links to the article page from other web pages on the site) are also important. If you can’t link to the page from the homepage, keep it as close to the homepage as possible and weed out extraneous links (try putting all your site policies on a single page).

Reprint articles, like the search engine traffic they bring, cost nothing. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Forget the “duplicate content penalty.” Get in on content reprints and share the search engine wealth.

i would like to point out that this blog has been written by Bryan Seawell and i have found it very interesting and wanted to share it with you all.

There are plenty of copywriters out there and i have recently found a very good one which is a portal for freelancers its called copify, now there director is a friend of mine and let me trial his service to give my opinion and i think they have been brilliant and the SEO Content provided was well researched and well written good job.

By the end of the train journey, we all decided he and they do! Reputation management online is crucial. When you google your name, what comes up? Well, here is the solution. Celebrities, government figures and other famous people all over the world use search engine optimization services to help their name/company/reputation (when search for) come up in a positive light. A good example of this would be to google Simon Cowell. Obviously he has alot of good stories about his professional acumen, however, if a bad news story came online that could harm his reputation, how could he stop people finding it? The answer would be to optimise the words that people search for to find the bad news and rank a positive story instead that puts a different spin on things. People like Max Clifford utilise this alot. Ill leave you all thinking, I could go on and on about this subject!

It’s no secret that keyword optimisation is probably the biggest tool used by SEO experts to raise their Page and Site rankings. It’s not without a reason that they say, “When it comes to SEO, Content is The King”. Your content might be laden with well-spaced keywords, can be user-friendly and, in case you are really good, fun to read as well. So, what is it that can differentiate your webpage from the ordinary in terms of search engine ranking? The answer is keyword marketing and optimization using a keyword rich title.

Yes people, titling is probably one of the most important, yet oddly underrated attribute that can only further the prospects of your webpage featuring high up the search engine rankings. The logic behind this can be well understood if one tries to understand the algorithm of search patterns of various search engines. Google’s crawler, also known as GOOGLEBOT, collects and reads documents from the web and builds a searchable index for Google. What actually happens is that Googlebot follows HREF and SRC links. Hence, when this crawler visits your webpage it starts from the very beginning in a normal left-to-right pattern. So, it becomes clearly obvious how important and beneficial it is to mention your keyword right in the title itself. In fact, starting your title with the targeted keyword can be very useful. Lastly, it is advisable to contain your title within 60-65 characters (including spaces) as specified by Google.

However, do not compromise on the quality of the content in order to accommodate keywords. Hence, make sure that keyword usage is within the search engines’ specifications, which normally ranges between 3-5% for the entire article body. A decent and keyword rich title can sure optimize your webpage and get you loads of useful and targeted traffic.

Yesterday I commented on the deal with Yahoo and Microsoft, which will span over the next 10 years with a search-and-advertising agreement which in essence will take the latter from the search business & finally will make Microsoft a search contender. This all throws up some pertinent questions such as; what will this mean for SEO and what impact will it have on the search field?

In essence the deal will enable Microsoft a 10-year license to Yahoo’s core search technologies. This smart man oeuvre by Microsoft will allow them to integrate this valuable search engine technology into it’s own. [Bing formerly known as Live and MSN]. Yahoo have agreed to take a step back from the Search Engine Business. Each time in the future you utilise Yahoo’s search facility it will produce results using Microsoft’s search engine. Yahoo will remain in control of their user interface for its own search engine, so it will look like you are searching on Yahoo.

Yahoo and Microsoft are integrating their paid search technologies, they have aired that this will happen approximately 1 year after the integration of their free search technologies, or sometime in 2011 for most major countries. The completion date of when all results shown on Yahoo are delivered by Microsoft will be sometime early 2012. Again, I see this change of direction as positive for users of the internet, to give a broader spectrum of search facilities can only mean a step forward.
